In response to weekend demonstrations in Los Angeles following raids throughout L.A. County by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, and President Trump ordering the deployment of 2,000 California National Guard troops against protesters there, Bay Area residents came together for a second day of protests largely focused on marching around San Francisco’s Mission District.
The Monday evening rally began with speakers like District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder and members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, who addressed a crowd at the 24th and Mission BART Plaza, followed by a march through the neighborhood. Along with chants of “ICE out of the bay” and vulgar statements in Spanish and English, the procession was energized by music and dancing, with groups coming together to express their dissatisfaction with Trump’s immigration policies.
Other protesters had gathered Monday afternoon near City Hall. Monday’s demonstrations in San Francisco followed significant protests and clashes with police Sunday, when more than 150 people were arrested, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The Monday evening march was overwhelmingly peaceful, with tense moments while marchers passed by the Police Department’s Mission Station, which led to chants of “quit your job” and “kill yourself” directed toward officers gathered outside, and rattling of barriers, which had been placed around the station, typically used to control crowds along parade routes.
Once the sun went down, some protesters left or broke off into smaller groups, while others used spray paint to tag businesses and vehicles around the Mission.
Mission Local reported that later clashes with police in the neighborhood led to violence and arrests.
