Maria Santos dropped off her ballot at the polling station south of Market Street near the Yerba Buena Center. It’s a convenient spot for her as she works and lives nearby. There were already a dozen people there, but that’s not a long line. Poll workers anticipate more people will stop by after 5, when the workday ends. “Good thing is I worked early in the morning,” she said.

Santos filled out her ballot last night with her family. The ballot issue she cares most about is Proposition 40, known as the billionaire tax measure, which would enact a one-time 5% tax on billionaires’ net worth — along with the confusingly positioned propositions 41 and 42, which if enacted would nullify it. “They are tricky,” she said, “so you just have to know which one you are voting for.”

While Santos always tries to go out and vote, it’s not often the case for her family. “My kids, they don’t usually vote, they don’t participate,” Santos said. But last night, after she filled out her ballot, her adult children, sat by her and filled theirs out as well. “We’re making sure we know what these propositions are, and we get heard by voting,” she said.
