For two decades, Dance Mission Theater has operated a performing arts center, run classes for children and adults, and advanced a mission of arts and social justice at 24th and Mission streets. Adelante (which means onward in Spanish) is the organization’s 20-year celebration, taking place Nov. 8 at the Herbst Theater.
Civic talked with Artistic Director Krissy Keefer and Managing Director Stella Aydelman about calling out injustice through dance in a changing political and environmental landscape, and persevering in a gentrifying city.

“Artists have vision. That’s how you create art, is, you have to see something and then try to make it real. So I think some artists are actually ahead of the game and see trends and see things happening before the general public does, and then they create something that mirrors back to people what their experience is. And if artists are tapped in, there’s a success there.” — Krissy Keefer, artistic director of Dance Mission Theater
