London Breed, the incumbent District 5 Supervisor and Board President, has held the seat since 2013. The life-long resident of District 5 studied political science/public service at the University of California, Davis, and got her master’s degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco. For five years, Breed was on the Redevelopment Agency Commission to help create affordable housing units, and served as executive director of the African American Art & Culture Complex.

Her work has included prioritizing renters for affordable housing; supporting permanent housing and youth programs for the homeless; promoting neighborhood safety through community policing, transportation and ambulance response times; and fighting for environmental health with CleanPowerSF. Breed focuses on working to improve BART, fund additional transportation and continue “source reduction and education to get us to Zero Waste, building efficiency improvements, litter and runoff reduction, clean energy production.”

“I was born in District 5, and raised by my grandmother in public housing. I’m a lifelong renter and live in the Lower Haight with my roommate Ben,” Breed said in her candidate statement. “As your District 5 Supervisor and Board President, I’ve worked to address the issues you care about and hope to earn your support again.”

Dean Preston is executive director of Tenants Together, a nonprofit that works to advance tenants’ rights to safe, affordable housing. Before that, he represented low-income tenants for seven years as staff attorney of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic. He studied law at University of California Hastings College of the Law.

The 20-year District 5 resident founded a neighborhood coalition to demand more affordable housing and created Tenants Rights Bootcamp, which visited neighbors to teach tenants about their rights. Preston has also worked to save rent control, championed the Small Business Protection Act and founded Affordable Divis “to win affordable housing on Divisadero Corridor.” His priorities include establishing rent caps, universal pre-school, a Muni Rider’s Bill of Rights and promoting police reform and community policing.

“I worked as a civil rights attorney for victims of police misconduct and unscrupulous landlords before founding Tenants Together, California’s only statewide renters organization,” Preston said in his candidate statement. “My father and grandparents were refugees forced from Nazi Germany. I believe that everyone deserves a secure and affordable home.”

Our methodology

The Public Press chose to count endorsements from organizations that backed multiple candidates or ballot measures, and that made those endorsements available online. We did not count endorsements from individuals.

Some organizations endorsed a first and second choice for candidates in some races. Those preferences are not represented here.

If you think we missed an important organization, please tell us. We’d love to hear from you.
